Settlers of Nauru2020
Settlers of Nauru is a boardgame for a minimum of three ministers,
to a maximum of six ministers, the head of the Defense Forces and a captain
of a Norweigan freighter. Each player controls a group of refugees or
Navy operatives who,
through various means such as discarding unwanted offspring, punching holes
in their ship or by creating a media spectacle, attempt to prevent 600
new colonists from landing on their section of shore.
Obstacles to avoid along the way are accusations of racism, the implication
that they are terrorists and a senate inquiry.
Night of Long Pork
Its been 20 years since the Settlers arrived on Nauru, and things have
not been going well. The short term attention span of the Australian
public has meant that the Settlers' plight has been ignored. A lack of
of appropriate resources like Health Care, media spectacles, electricity,
sheep, food and money has been an extra burden on the small Pacific nation,
and now their infrastructure is collapsing.
The game will be run in two sessions. The first session will be the
normal game play - starting from two detention camps and expanding
outwards until one of independant contractors (as personified by the
players) has grabbed the majority of the government tenders.
Then we speed forward 20 years. The less well-resourced camps have had
a few "incidents", which mean that those players start with bonus new
development cards. As the game plays through, the new residents are
whipped into an orgy of destruction by the indifference of their
would-be saviours and camps, roads and other infrastructure is destroyed.
The player that has the last remaining camp is the winner and their
personnel will be shipped off the island before the hordes sweep through.
